[He hurries to place the pan on the stove as per Diarmuid's instructions. Then, he watches Diarmuid's actions closely.]
Wow. Never figured you'd have to flip the sausages too.
[He pokes at the patties with his spatula, watching them simmer in their own juices.]
It isn't! I'd do even more for your birthday! I just wanted to take care of you today. The way you always take care of me. We're brothers, so one of us shouldn't be taking care of the other all the time, right?
no subject
[Diarmuid reaches over and pulls his brother's hand away from the sausage pan.]
Don't mess with them except when flipping them. The grease pops and you could get burned. Just let them sit for now.
[He adjusts the heat on the stove and then checks on the pancake. Since it's done, he pulls it out of the pan and gets ready to pour another one.]
Watch me pour this time, okay?
no subject
It does! I'm starting to be a more responsible hero! Just watch!
[He nods and watches with baited breath as Diarmuid pours the next pancake.]
no subject
[Diarmuid starts pouring and counts to three as he does. The result is a much smaller, neater pancake. He then holds the batter out to Cu Chulainn.]
Do you want to try again? As this size, you can get more than one in the pan at a time.
no subject
[He more or less snatches the batter from Diarmuid and starts pouring it.]
Onetwothree.
[He counts quickly and pulls away quickly, resulting in a tiny, lopsided pancake.]
Aw crap. It doesn't look as good as yours.
no subject
[Diarmuid takes the batter from his brother, setting it up somewhere safe. After double checking that the pancakes are cooking nicely, he turns to the mess that is the eggs.]
This we will need to start over with. It looks like you were hitting them too hard. They kept crushing, right?
no subject
[He holds up an egg.]
Is there a special way to crack this too?
no subject
[Diarmuid holds out his hand, while at the same time taking a moment to check and flip the pancakes.]
It takes a little bit to get the hang of it. Believe me, I have crushed my fair share of eggs.
no subject
But you always crack them perfectly. When did you learn not to crush them?
no subject
[Diarmuid laughs softly and then takes the egg, posing to crack it.]
Hold it like this and watch. I am tapping it very lightly.
no subject
[He watches intently.]
Alright, lightly.
no subject
[Diarmuid holds another egg out to his brother, at the same time moving the pancakes off the burner for the moment so they don't burn.]
Give it a try.
no subject
Here goes.
[He taps the egg against the bowl. The first tap does nothing. The second tap cracks the egg a little too deeply, but doesn't completely crush it.]
Yay! Look! Look! I cracked it!
no subject
[Diarmuid reaches out to gently ruffle his brother's hair.]
Carefully let the egg spill into this pan now. Don't put anymore pressure on the egg or else it might crush.
no subject
Come on, there has to be a way to make this go faster.
no subject
[Diarmuid holds out his hand.]
There is a faster way, but with the egg so damaged, it would be easy to crush it now. However, let me try. Maybe I can speed things up a little.
no subject
[He hands Diarmuid the egg again.]
Show me.
no subject
It's going to be a little messy, but I'm not going to hit it anymore. Watch.
[He then very carefully pulls the two sides of the egg apart, cupped hands catching the egg as it spills out. Once all of the egg is out, Diarmuid checks for egg shells and, finding none, opens his hands so that the egg can slide into the pan. He keeps a gentle hold on the shell halves so they don't fall in.]
There. Messy, but no shells.
no subject
[He watches as the egg white slowly turns from transparent to opaque.]
You get that one. I'll make my own after that one's done.
[He grabs the spatula and flips the egg...also flipping it a little too high.]
no subject
Too hard, brother. You need to put less strength into your flipping as well. This is making breakfast, not fighting a war.
no subject
It's so difficult it's almost a war!
no subject
[Diarmuid takes the pancakes out of the pan and picks up the batter again, at the same time turning off the burner under the sausages since he can see they are done.]
Want to try pouring pancakes again while the egg finishes cooking?
no subject
[He focuses carefully as he pours the batter. He still pours a little too much, though.]
Are the sausages done, brother? Try them! Tell me if I made them right!
no subject
[Diarmuid leaves his brother to pour the next pancake, so that he can grab a plate and a fork. He pulls one of the sausage patties out of the pan, puts it on the plate, and then cuts it in half.]
It is done. One half for me and one for you. Here! Have a bite!
no subject
Okay.
[He takes his half of the patty and takes a bite.]
Mm! I think it's good!
[He face falls a little.]
But...it's not as good as yours.
