While that might often be the case, brother, you cannot expect it to always be the case. If you do, the one time you run into someone faster than you will be the last time you run into someone faster than you.

[Diarmuid removes his hand from his brother's head, proud that the boy kept his balance even if it was a struggle.]

Your time is up! Very well done.

[He puts his foot down and lets his arms drop. He lets go of both his swords and pumps his fist in joy.]

Hooray! I did it! I did it! Now show me another move!

[Diarmuid's proud look changes into something much more stern when his brother drops his weapons.]

Those are your partners. Don't treat them like that.

[beforetights]

O-oh!

[He quickly scrambles to pick up his swords again.]

Sorry...I got excited.

[thepursued]

[Diarmuid's expression softens in understanding--he had been an excitable child once too--and he nods.]

Just don't let it happen again. They help keep you alive and should always be treated with respect lest they fail you when you most need them.

What happens if they fail you then?

[He has to wonder about all the weapons he broke right before he finally took up arms. Did that count as failing, since they couldn't withstand the strength of his grip?]

Then either they weren't truly your partners, or you didn't treat them with the respect you should have.

[Diarmuid studies his brother for a moment before something pops into his mind.]

You are thinking of the weapons you went through when you took up arms, aren't you? If things really were as they were in the tales I heard growing up, that was a case of them not being the right partner for you. They could not match your strength.

Yeah, I was.

[He nods.]

What happens if I find the right partner, though? Will I know?

[thepursued]

[A confident look enters his eyes.]

You will know. I don't know if your weapons will sing to you like mine do, but they will find a way to let you know. They always do.

[beforetights]

Hm...

[He hefts both of the swords he's currently holding.]

What about these? You gave them to me, so they're already special! Even if they're not real swords!

[thepursued]

They are special, but as you say, they are not real swords.

[Diarmuid motions toward his brother's practice weapons.]

While they are your partners for now, you will find new ones someday who will be your real partners.

[beforetights]

You think so?

[He thinks for a moment.]

Then I want twin spears like yours! So we can match!

[thepursued]

That would be nice, wouldn't it?

[Diarmuid reaches out to ruffle his brother's hair.]

But we will have to see what weapons come to you. Sometimes we get what we want and sometimes we don't. It is usually for the best either way, though.

...Can we wear matching armor then? Or can I comb my hair the same as you?

[Diarmuid bends down so that he can look he brother in the eyes and give him a warm smile.]

While I appreciate you wanting to be like me, every hero should be themselves and make an image for themselves. You will find out what armor and styles make you soon enough. Somehow, I doubt they will be much like mine, but there is nothing wrong with that.

[beforetights]

[He makes a face.]

Then...then I'm gonna find a style even better than yours! So I can be a hero you're proud of! So I'll be worthy of my legend in your time!

[thepursued]

[A knowing twinkle enters Diarmuid's eyes.]

You do that. That is a goal I will be proud to support you fully on. Shall we move onto learning that new attack move now?

[He doesn't say that he is already proud of his brother, because he doesn't want the boy to get the wrong idea and settle for his current level being good enough. Diarmuid doesn't actually think that will happen, but better safe than sorry since his brother is still so young.]

[That catches his attention quickly enough.]

Yeah! Show me! Hurry up and show me!

[He holds his swords up in front of himself.]

[Diarmuid laughs, standing and gathering his own weapons again.]

Patience brother. Just stand as you are and I will demonstrate. Don't try to block. Just watch.

[He gives Cu Chulainn a moment to ready himself and then attacks, first dropping low as if he is going to try and strike at his brother's legs before stopping short and redirecting his weapons to strike upward under the boy's own weapons and at his chest. There is a delay between when he swings his blades, since in a real battle he is sure the first strike would be blocked leaving--hopefully--an opening for the second one to connect.]

Now let me try.

[He imitates Diarmuid's moves, making sure to pause for the interval. After practicing that last defensive maneuver, he knows that there's a chance that his first blow will be blocked. However, even though he understands keeping slight intervals between his attacks, the angle of his slashes and stabs are slightly off.]

[thepursued]

Stay right like that.

[To be honest, it's not bad for the first time trying, and Diarmuid is glad to see his brother apply what he learned before. He moves from his defending position and then shifts the angles of his brother's weapons slightly.]

You need to be behind and under. Even if you can't strike your enemies body you can push their weapon away, opening them up for a follow up strike that will hit their body.

Oops. Let me try again.

[He imitates the move again, this time remembering to keep the angles right. However, he devotes so much effort to focusing on the attack that his movements seem stiff. Still, he's obviously better at attacking than defending, since he's grasping this better than the block.]

[thepursued]

Relax. It is better to be off on the angles than too stiff. Being stiff just makes it that much easier for me to knock your weapon away or move in a way you cannot react to fast enough.

[Diarmuid really isn't surprised that his brother is catching on to the attack faster than the defense. He would have been honestly surprised if it had been the other way around considering the boy's legend.]

[He nods and repeats the move again. This time, the angle go back to being a bit off, but at least his motions are smoother.]

How do you move so smoothly all the time? For both attacking and defending? Do you always have to think about it?

I actually don't think about it. It is instinct for me now.

[Diarmuid gives his brother a serious look.]

Don't let that discourage you. You have a lot more training ahead of you. I know soon enough those things will be instinct for you as well.

[Well, maybe not the defending as much, but that will certainly be true for the attacking.]
