[He winces.]

Ouch! Where did you burn yourself? Hope it wasn't the hands. Would be hard to fight then.

It was my hands unfortunately, but I was lucky and the burns were mild. They didn't affect my fighting at all and healed quickly.

[Diarmuid peeks over at the pancakes.]

They seem ready for flipping. Do you want to try again?

When did you learn? Who taught you?

[He turns his attention to the pancakes.]

Yes, let me try again.

[His tongue stuck out of the side of his mouth in concentration, he takes the spatula and flips the pancake again. It doesn't go as high as the previous pancakes, but it does go into the air and then comes down into the pan on its side, folding in half and turning the pancake into only a half-circle.]

[Diarmuid laughs softly at the chain of questions.]

I taught myself when you were sleeping or otherwise not causing trouble.

[After his brother's half-successful flip, Diarmuid grabs a fork and shifts the pancake so it is flat again.]

Better. It didn't go out of the pan this time!

[He laughs.]

Do I really sleep that much, Brother?

[He watches Diarmuid poke the pancake flat.]

This one is gonna look even better!

[He flips the second pancake in the pan.]

There you go! That time was much better.

[Diarmuid grabs the now cooked egg and puts it onto a plate.]

And now the egg is done too. You don't really sleep that much. I just make good use of my time.

[He has incentive. Diarmuid still remembers the soup incident so long ago.]

So as soon as these pancakes are done, we can begin eating?

[He slobbers a little at the thought of food.]

What else did you learn while I was asleep? Was it just cooking?

Yes, that's right.

[Diarmuid sets to work gathering everything together on a plate for his brother to take to the table, while watching the pancakes at the same time so they don't burn.]

I focused mostly on the cooking. It was what I needed the most work with and it never seemed to wake you up either. Other things could wait for a different time.

Got it.

[He pokes at the pancakes to see if they're done.]

If I don't sleep anymore, can we just stay up all the time and learn things together?

[thepursued]

[Diarmuid laughs softly and then pushes his brother's hands away from the pancakes.]

Just give them a minute. They are almost done.

I wish I could say that would be okay, but you and I both know how cranky you get when you don't sleep. You won't be able to learn anything when you are like that.

Come on, I'm getting better at it! What if I ate more sugar? Then I'd have energy all the time!

[thepursued]

No, what you would have is a stomachache all the time.

[Diarmuid tests the pancakes again and then places them onto his brother's plate.]

Go sit at the table. I'll be there in just a moment to join you.

[beforetights]

No, you sit first. I'm serving you today, remember?

[thepursued]

[Diarmuid gives his brother a look, but decides not to argue with him in this case. Instead, he puts the rest of what they have prepared onto another plate and then makes sure all the stove burners are off before moving to sit at the table.]

All right then, Great Brother-Server! May I have my breakfast now?

[beforetights]

Yes you may. The best breakfast for the best big brother.

[He sets the prepared food into front of Diarmuid, and then hops into his own chair.]

I am sure it will be.

[Diarmuid gives Cu Chulainn a wide grin.]

Thank you again for all this hard work. I am proud of you, brother.

I'm glad! It's another step toward being a splendid knight, like you!

[He knows he's supposed to be the childhood hero here, but Diarmuid is the more experienced knight.]

[Diarmuid nods and then waves toward his brother's plate.]

You made a lot of progress today. Now, eat before it gets cold.

[He nods and starts scarfing down food. After a few bites, he stops.]

It still doesn't taste as good as your cooking...

You just need more practice, brother. This is very good for your first try!

[Just a few egg shells in the pancakes. It could be a lot worse.]

Don't get discouraged.

I won't. I'm a hero and I don't give up.

[He eats more of his pancakes and starts on his eggs.]

So what will we do after breakfast today, Brother?

Good! You are going to be a wonderful hero someday if you keep that up.

[Which Diarmuid knows he does, of course.]

I don't know. I hadn't really planned that far ahead. Do you have something in mind?

Hm...I wanna get some more training in! And you should spar with me! I've got my own spear now!

[Technically, it's his uncle's spear, but it's also the only one that can stand against his grasp when he's irritated.]

That sounds like an excellent idea.

[Diarmuid gives his brother a wide smile.]

You can show me just how much your skills have grown.

[He nods.]

Just you wait! I'll beat you this time! I'm already beating warriors who're taller than me!
