Suzaku's eyes widened. So that was what Diarmuid had forgotten... He shook his head, "Though I cannot claim to like anything that removes peoples memories, I know how painful having a bad memory returned to you is, if it is best that he does not learn it then he will not hear it from me, nor will I push him to remember."

"Thank you. I know it is distressing to him now not to know, but it is better to be distressed than to have your mind completely broken by what you saw. My father did not cast his spell lightly," Diarmuid opens his eyes again and then smiles at Suzaku. "It sounds like he is just as lucky to know you as I am to know the version of you I know. Both of you are very caring and brave."

Suzaku nodded, "I understand." He wondered if Diarmuid's father had had some kind of Geass like Charles. If so he had used it more kindly than Charles ever had.

He looked down at Diarmuid's words, "And though you are an adult you still have a far too forgiving nature."

Diarmuid shakes his head, "I would rather forgive than anything else. I know the feel of hate and rage more acutely now. They are things I don't want to feel myself anymore than I absolutely have to, and I don't wish them on anyone else either. Besides, why wouldn't I forgive one who is like a brother to me? It seems even if you are from a different world than the Suzaku I know, the fact that you are too hard on yourself hasn't changed."

Suzaku blinked, like a brother to him? Suzaku hadn't ever had anyone name him brother before, and he wondered at this other version of himself, if he was even like Suzaku at all.

"If your Suzaku is anything like me then he has reason to."

"Reason? Perhaps, but he is fighting to make up for those mistakes and that makes him a much better person than he gives himself credit for," Diarmuid smiles fondly. "He is stubborn, but I will not give up until he realizes his own worth. I owe him that much for all that he has done for me."

"And what of you? Do you fight to fix the wrongs you feel you have done?"

"The wrongs I have done, they are not just a feeling." He wonders what kind of person Diarmuid was that he waved away such crimes as Suzaku's as mistakes. Unless the Suzaku he had known was from a very different world, was not a murderer, not a traitor.

"I am unsure how to fix things when I am not even in my own world, I believed finding a way out of the world I found myself in would be a start but instead I helped doom it and now I am elsewhere, that world and those I knew there are lost to me."

Diarmuid's fond smile remains as Suzaku speaks, perhaps even growing softer, "Same Suzaku no matter the world. You fix them by continuing to fight and by not giving up. Mistakes happen. Things go wrong, but as long as you keep fighting to make them right someday you will succeed. My father told me that as a child and it is something I still believe today. As way will make itself know to you. Until then, it is your duty to continue fighting."

Suzaku nodded, "They are wise words. I think I will have to remind the younger you of those next time he does something like set fire to his kitchen." Fighting was important, and he would succeed eventually, escaping from the city, going home, defeating Britannia.

Diarmuid blinks in surprise at Suzaku's words, "He set the kitchen on fire? Oh no...someone let him try to cook, didn't they?" He shakes his head, "Modern cooking. Apparently, it is my bane in any world..."

"That would be me yes." He winced, like he should have known teaching small children from far past times to cook would have been a disaster. "I didn't think much could go wrong with soup."

Diarmuid waves a dismissive hand, "Don't blame yourself. It's not you. It's me. I have great cooking skills...just in limited areas. That he is making soup is impressive. I can't seem to get passed eggs and flour..."

"He is doing well. I don't really have many skills in the kitchen myself." He shrugged. "So far there has only been the one fire, I take that as good news."

"Yes, very good news. Especially if he is cooking together with his 'brother.' I would really rather not think about the damage the two of them could potentially cause," Diarmuid shivers slightly. "I can definitely see campfires being built inside of the house for one thing..."

"I hope that I have convinced him that that is a bad idea. I promised him a outdoor one at some point." He looked down. "I trust that you have not been setting any kitchens on fire, in whatever place my other self shares with you."

"Promising him an outdoor one is probably a good way to keep him in line. It's that blue-haired brother of his I worry about," Diarmuid laughs lightly and then shakes his head. "No fires yet, thankfully. Though, the Tower is trying to make me start one, I swear. It does things like that. Changing the level of the burners, raising the heat on the oven..."

"Yes, he is very... difficult." Suzaku nodded. "But your younger self keeps him in control, he is a good big brother."

He raises an eyebrow, "They change by themselves?"

Diarmuid laughs a little nervously, "Maybe? Very little works the way it should in the Tower, so it would not be surprising if they changed themselves. However..." his voice suddenly gets very soft, "I...might accidentally brush against them sometimes too..."

Suzaku nodded, "Indeed." It was easily done, he couldn't exactly talk, his own track record of cooking was not that great. "What kind of place is this tower?" Though thinking of a differing version of himself was strange, it was also interesting and he wished to know.

"It...is a terrible place," a frown crosses Diarmuid's face as he thinks about it. "There is much we don't know and much we only sort of know. Our worlds were destroyed by something and a boy managed to save one person from each of those worlds. However, he was unable to pull more than just our souls to the Tower. This..." he motions to his body, "is not my real body. It is a construct made of gel and wire. We are currently fighting to find a way to fix all the worlds that were destroyed, but it is not an easy task. Not when the people in charge of the place routinely do all they can to torture and break us."

Suzaku blinked, looking shocked. Their worlds had been destroyed, their bodies were not real. Torture... He had though Rakuen City had been bad, the city... Manhattan, that Lelouch had been in before had sounded awful, but this...

"I am sorry..." He blinked, "It sounds like a terrible place..."

It is, but it is not all bad.

[An oddly gentle look crosses Diarmuid's face.]

I have met people I should never have met and now call family. I have seen again those who I should never have seen. I should be dead and yet I still live and have the chance to make my life mean something this time around.

[He laughs softly.]

Most of the time, I hate the Administrators, but sometimes...sometimes I want to thank them.

[Suzaku blinked sadly as the meaning of Diarmuid's words dawned on him. Life to mean something this time around, meant that his last life had ended. He knew it was possible to bring those who were dead into these strange other worlds. Diarmuid did not seem very old, older than Suzaku but not that much... he should have known. Those as passionate and noble as Diarmuid never lived long.]

You can appreciate such things and still hate them for what they have done.

[Diarmuid is confused for a moment by the sad look on Suzaku's face, before realizing just what he has told the man without thought of the child he knows who still has so much life ahead of him.]

Forgive me. I am so used to death being...something else that I forget it not the same way for everyone. Try not to let yourself be sad for him. He will be challenged all of his life, but he will do great things as well. His life will have meaning.

[It's making sure his second--or should that be third--life has meaning that he is still working on.]

I am glad for that. [Sometimes the best you could hope for was that life had meaning, even if it was short.] He is a great child, and I am certain having met you that he will grow to be a great man.
