normal derry because i'm a terrible fucking person
[He didn't have a choice. Everything indicated the war was preparing to start now, ten years after the disaster in this same city. And if he wanted to slam the metaphorical brakes on it, Waver had to participate. Already he'd arranged to work with Tohsaka, though he suspected they'd be keeping their distance from one another more often than not. She was...difficult, to say the least.]
[The whole situation left a terrible taste in Waver's mouth. If he was to participate in the war again, he'd need to summon a Servant. There was only one heroic spirit Waver would trust to watch his back and only one catalyst he could use on short notice. So of course, he had no choice at all.]
[But it was going to hurt. It was going to ache horribly to know that ten years later, his only friend would look at him and know absolutely nothing that had transpired here a decade ago. The name 'Waver Velvet' would mean nothing, and all he'd done in that time would hold no true significance.]
[...Drawing the magic circle in the same place as before had left him with an upsetting amount of time to reflect upon the situation and how much he was going to hate it. Scowling throughout the preparations, Waver had taken off his pendant and set it on the other side of the circle. Concentration was required for this ritual; if he made a mistake, Waver would hate himself more than he already was. So he went through the incantation in a steady voice, blocking out every distraction.]
I make my oath here. [Forget everything. Erase how hard his own heart was pounding in his chest, discard all thoughts of how painful this was going to be, and above all else focus only on what needed to be done.]
I am that person who is to become the virtue of all Heaven. I am that person who is covered with the evil of all Hades.
[Someone had to destroy it. And it had to be him--no one else but Waver and Tohsaka would care enough to try.]
Thou seven heavens, clad in a trinity of words, come past thy restraining rings and be thou the hands that protect the balance--
[The circle he'd drawn in blood flared up with crackling magical energy, kicking up dust now as it had done before. And as he raised an arm to shield against the light and wind, Waver ground his teeth together and braced for the only logical thing that could follow.]
I think that was suppose to read "a terribly awesome fucking person" so I fixed it for you. :-D
[The words leave Diarmuid's mouth automatically. They are what is suppose to be said to finish the contract. To bind him to this new battle. This new Lord. This new chance to do things right.
Unlike with Fionn, he will stay by this Lord's side until the end.
Diarmuid arrives kneeling and remains there, head bowed, awaiting acknowledgment. He will not act until his Master wishes him to, though his eyes open slightly and watch as the smoke and dust from the summoning swirls around him. Diarmuid cannot see who his Master is from this position, but it doesn't matter. His Lord is his Lord and his will is to be carried out.
Where that will leads them matters not as long as Diarmuid is allow to remain at his Lord's side until the battle is won this time.]
hehehehe
...Yes. [It stung like a punch to the face, or like the Command Spells burning their way into his skin as he replied. His only friend, the one person that had truly appreciated him, was for all intents and purposes dead. Waver couldn't hold this Diarmuid accountable, but at the same time he couldn't act as though they were the same. His own Servant would think he was insane if he broke down as he desperately wanted to.]
[So instead of completely losing it, Waver kept a steady expression and knelt down to Lancer's eye level, extending his hand for a simple handshake in greeting.]
My name is Waver Velvet. It's a pleasure to meet you.
no subject
[Diarmuid uncurls slightly from his bowed position, curious golden eyes flicking up to meet Waver's before flicking down again in respect.]
I am your knight. Such a thing is not necessary.
no subject
[At least, when it came to Diarmuid. Everyone else could fuck off.]
As for why, it's because I'd rather look someone in the eye when I'm talking to them.
no subject
[Diarmuid cuts off for a moment, and again looks up at Waver with curious eyes. This time, he doesn't look away.]
How do you know that? That I am so accustomed to deference? Did...you summon me specifically?
no subject
[He stood up and walked to the other side of the summoning circle, picking up the catalyst he'd used and securing it around his neck again.]
I needed you specifically, Diarmuid. Someone that I know--[He faltered for a second, stopping himself.] --rather, that I have reason to believe doesn't require the Grail itself is exactly the kind of person I want.
no subject
Pressing the issue would be improper. no matter how curious he is]
I understand. In that, you are correct. My wish doesn't specifically require the Grail to fulfill.
no subject
[Quite the opposite, really.]
Listen, I'm afraid we've got a lot to go over before we get started. I'm staying in a hotel not too far from here, so let's head back there and discuss the matter. Is that alright with you?
no subject
[Diarmuid cuts himself off as Waver mentions talking more, but in a different location. His question can wait until they have moved to this new location. With one hand pressed against his chest, Diarmuid bows to Waver.]
As you wish, My Lord. Do you want me to shift into spirit form so that no one will see me?
no subject
[He shrugged, turning to leave.]
I'll see you there, in that case.
no subject
[Without waiting for a response from Waver, Diarmuid drops into spirit form and waits silently for Waver to lead the way.]
no subject
[Even so...this wouldn't be easy, he concluded upon entering his hotel room and almost immediately starting to make tea. Despite the fact he hadn't shown it, the lecturer's nerves were already shot to hell and back.]
...You can come out now, if you want. Make yourself comfortable, we'll be here for a little while.
no subject
I am...comfortable. I do not wish to make you waste energy by manifesting unless you truly wish it. You said there were things we needed to speak of?
no subject
It's going to take a little while to get through everything. Just humor me for a while, okay?
no subject
[As he speaks, Diarmuid materializes in the doorway to the kitchen near where Waver is sitting. However, he makes no move to sit at the table, though his does notice Waver has prepared two cups of tea.]
Take your time. I cannot fight properly if I do not know all the details of the battle. Are...you expecting a visitor?
no subject
[Brick. Wall.]
I'll start with who I am. I already mentioned my name, and I'm a magus of the Association...or at least I am now. I suspect they won't be thrilled with me once this is all over.
[Shrugging, he took a drink of his own tea.] Some years ago, I was in this city at the conclusion of the previous Holy Grail War and witnessed a disaster that still lacks a proper explanation. My research has however led me to believe the Grail itself responsible for it.
My presence in the war and in Fuyuki is with only the goal of dismantling the Holy Grail in mind. To do that, I need the help of a Servant I can trust, that has no desire for the Grail itself.
no subject
Is there...honey in this?
[As Waver continues speaking, Diarmuid gazes into the tea as if he is trying to figure out if it's really okay for him to drink it. He is distracted, though, when his Master mentions destroying the Grail. Wide, shocked, eyes come up to meet Waver's.]
Are...you allowed to do that? Isn't this war suppose to be about winning the Grail so you can make a wish on it?
no subject
Continuing on from your third question, I think that might no longer be relevant. If the Grail is damaged in some aspect as I have reason to believe it is, then I suspect the 'winner' would not be very pleased with their outcome.
And if I'm mistaken--which I don't believe I am--it doesn't matter. This entire system puts too many at risk. Magi, Servants, and civilians alike suffering for an outcome that in this case might just be disaster...I can't stand for it. I don't care what the consequences for me are, someone has to bring this childish game to an end.
no subject
However, when he speaks, the question he asks might be the last thing Waver is expecting and is really more of a statement than a question.]
You were not just an observer to the last war--the one that went so wrong. You were a participant...
[His Master had not likely won since he doesn't know the details of what exactly went wrong, but he knows enough that there is no way he could have just been a bystander. The rules of the war require too much secrecy for that even among magi.]
no subject
[His hand tightened almost imperceptibly on the cup he held, and that was Waver's only reaction. Trust Diarmuid of all people to be more clever than he'd hoped on that particular matter.]
That's correct.
no subject
The answer doesn't surprise him and it plus the tensing leads him to make one last connection that, if true, will explain several things about the way Waver had acted before.]
You summoned me then, didn't you?
no subject
All I'm concerned about is destroying the Grail before any more unnecessary casualties start piling up.
no subject
[Diarmuid's eyes are locked on the tea cup now, his hands tightening around it enough that it might soon be in danger of breaking.]
If it didn't matter, you wouldn't care so much for that relic, and if it didn't matter you wouldn't have called back the same Servant, especially...
[He pauses, swallowing hard. When he speaks again, his voice is a lot softer.]
...one who obviously failed you. I'm sorry...I don't remember it.
no subject
[Waver sounded frustrated more than angry, free hand reaching for the pendant as Diarmuid mentioned it. Taking a breath to calm himself, Waver merely scowled for a moment before speaking in a steadier tone.]
...I knew you wouldn't, so don't apologize. That's far from being your fault.
