...It doesn't matter. [Waver glanced away, expression calm as he took another drink.]

All I'm concerned about is destroying the Grail before any more unnecessary casualties start piling up.

[Diarmuid's eyes are locked on the tea cup now, his hands tightening around it enough that it might soon be in danger of breaking.]

If it didn't matter, you wouldn't care so much for that relic, and if it didn't matter you wouldn't have called back the same Servant, especially...

[He pauses, swallowing hard. When he speaks again, his voice is a lot softer.]

...one who obviously failed you. I'm sorry...I don't remember it.

Who the hell said he failed me?

[Waver sounded frustrated more than angry, free hand reaching for the pendant as Diarmuid mentioned it. Taking a breath to calm himself, Waver merely scowled for a moment before speaking in a steadier tone.]

...I knew you wouldn't, so don't apologize. That's far from being your fault.

You didn't win the Grail. You didn't get your wish. You implied as much with your lack of knowledge about how things ended. That means he...I failed to stay with you until the end...

[Though his voice is steady, Diarmuid's eyes are far from that as they finally make their way to Waver's face. It's as if he really wants to believe what he is about to say, but is afraid of being wrong.]

I don't know why you are giving me this second chance, but I will do better this time. I swear it to you.

Don't be stupid. Losers don't survive the Grail War--the fact that I'm still breathing proves he didn't fail. I don't really care whether we won or lost.

[Frowning, Waver leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms.]

This is why I called you. I needed someone that I could trust to work as hard as I intend to.

[Diarmuid looks away from Waver again, closing his eyes. He is silent for several moments before shaking his head and finally speaking.]

I still don't understand, but the past is the past. It is not something I can change now even if I did understand. Our goal is to fight and win so that you can destroy the Grail, correct?

[A pair of serious golden eyes meet Waver's.]

Where do we start? What do you wish me to do, Master?

...First of all, just call me Waver. I'd rather cooperate with you equally than be your Master.

[He gave a hesitant smile, clearly satisfied with that answer.]

I think we might have a few days to spare; I tried to make sure I'd arrive a little early. For now, we'll just have to stay quiet while I try to finish looking over the city's layout and attempt to predict where the Grail's even going to manifest this time. We'll be working with Rin Tohsaka and whatever Servant she decides to summon at her own bloody leisure, so try to keep that in mind.

But...that is not how it works... Oh...never mind...

[Diarmuid sighs and presses a hand to his forehead. Hadn't he just said it didn't matter if he understood or not? Granted, that was about the past and this about now, but it makes no difference. All he needs to do is follow his master's orders and see him safely to victory. He can do that without understanding.

Though, it might be harder that way...]

If you haven't noticed, I'm not one for strict adherence to tradition.

I had suggested to Tohsaka we both operate out of her mansion, but she raised the point that the heir to one of the three families and a lord of the Association working together would draw far too much attention. So we'll be here barring some catastrophe or another. Is that alright with you?

I noticed. I am sorry that is it throwing me...

[Diarmuid falls silent, looking down at his tea. Part of him would like to sit and enjoy the rest of it, but he has a duty to do. He stands up and steps away from the table, before looking over at Waver.]

I have no problems. It is your choice as Master. However, if this is to be our base, I should go and patrol the area. The war may not have officially begun yet, but that is no excuse for me not taking your safety seriously.

Er...of course. I've already laid down a boundary field around the area to alert to any malicious intruders, but if you think that would be the better choice then go ahead.

I...

[Diarmuid bows his head slightly.]

I do not wish to question your preparations, but I do not wish to place you at risk either. Would you rather I remain here? I am sure there is probably more you need to tell me...

You should...do what you think is right. Having said that, if there's anything you want to ask about the situation, now might be the most convenient time.

[Diarmuid's hand tightens on the top of his chair, his knuckles quickly turning white.]

Do...you wish me question you?

[Questions? Oh yes, Diarmuid has them, but it is not really his place to question his Master's wishes. He is merely suppose to do as he is asked to ensure their victory.

But he is also confused and curious. So curious...]

Of course I do. If there's anything you want to know, I would want you to just ask. There's nothing I have to hide from someone I'm working with.

[Diarmuid remains standing by the chair for a long moment caught between going out and doing what would traditionally be his duty or staying and talking with his master to learn more, which is more nontraditional yet still a duty. Finally, he sits back down, wrapping his hands around the tea cup again.

However, when he speaks, it is not a question he asks.]

Thank you for letting me taste it again. Honey was one of my favorite things growing up.

I kind of guessed as much. It's good to hear you're enjoying it.

[Waver smiled slightly, finishing his own cup of tea once he'd said that.]

[Diarmuid nods, but doesn't say anything. Instead, he takes another drink of his tea. Even though it's starting to get cold, he still very much enjoys the taste. Only once the cup is empty does he speak again.]

You say that you are nontraditional. You know that I am a traditional thinker. What do you want me to do differently so that I don't become a hindrance to you?

... [Waver paused, folding his arms with a small frown. Why was it Diarmuid seemed to always take the path of most complication?]

You're not going to be a hindrance to me. All I'd ask is that you at least make an attempt to act natural. If you want to question me or some choice I make, then go ahead and do it. If there's anything you might want or need, speak up and I'll make sure you get it.

[Diarmuid gives Waver a confused look.]

N-no, I just meant...you shouldn't have to act like I'm above you or anything like that. I get enough of that at the Clock Tower, it's not really necessary here.

But...you are. I am just a knight no matter how skilled and you are my Lord and Master. Even more, I was summoned to serve you.

[Diarmuid motions toward Waver's hand that carries his command spells.]

You command me. It is only natural that I place you above me. Without you, I could not be here.

That doesn't mean anything. I didn't summon you to have someone as my subordinate. I want to work with you as equal partners, Command Spells or not. To be blunt, I dislike the idea of even having them at all.

[Diarmuid shuts his eyes. He is so used to following a Lord and everything the Grail has told him about war had prepared him to serve another Lord. It hadn't prepared him at all to have a partner...

...let alone one who doesn't even want his command spells.

Those words cause Diarmuid's eyes to snap back open and he looks at Waver in shock.]

Do you really trust me that much? That much that you don't even want your command spells?

Yes. [He answered without hesitation, sounding surprised this was even a question at all.]

Please, of all the heroic spirits that could stab me in the back? Your name's nowhere on the list. There's no need for me to order you around like some stuck-up idiot.
