...No. But you always have reason to smile. You enjoy battles with other warriors, and you enjoy working toward your wish of fighting loyally for your Master. Those are both knightly reasons.

[Diarmuid gives her a curious look.]

Do you not enjoy fighting with others and learning what you can of the world while protecting Lady Irisviel?

I enjoy learning about the world with Lady Irisviel, and I enjoy being with you. Everything else is but my duty.

Does something being your duty automatically mean it cannot be fun?

I've never found it particularly fun. But I have to endure it, don't I? I'm a knight. I cannot be anything else.

There are things that have to be endured sometimes, but that doesn't mean you can't take others and make them more enjoyable. I have found the best knights are adaptable and tend to look for ways to make even the most boring things at least a little more tolerable.

Oh? How did they do that? What sort of ideas did they come up with?

Many. Not all of them were good ideas either...

[The ones that involved lots of alcohol for instance.]

But sometimes making a dull duty into a game or a challenge helps. For example, can you do it with one hand instead of two or maybe can you finish this faster today than yesterday. Things like that.

[chavalry]

Hm...I could make it a game. But what will I get as a reward if I reach the conditions I set for myself?

That is a good question. I could say having fun instead of being bored is a good reward, but that isn't always enough.

[He pauses a moment to think and then continues.]

It is probably best to pick a reward based on whatever the challenge is. If it is a small one, a small reward will suffice. If it is a large one, then you would deserve a larger reward for completing it.

...I do not have very many pastimes or things to reward myself with...

[And then, her eyes shining with inspiration, she looks up at him.]

...Will you reward me, Lancer?

If you would like me to, I can try.

[How can he say no to that look?]

However, it would be wise for you to learn from the suggestions I give you so that you can someday begin picking your own rewards. I think they will mean more to you that way.

Can I demand a reward before doing the task? If I can...

[She blushes.]

Can I...have a piggyback ride, if I properly obey my Master's orders?

[Diarmuid steps in front of her, crouching down, and patting his shoulder.]

If you wished a piggyback ride, all you needed to do was ask. It does not need to be a reward. Or would you still prefer to wait until after we arrive so your master does not get the wrong idea?

We can wait until we get to my Master. Then you can carry me.

[She reaches up to grab his hand.]

Can we hold hands right now?

I would be honored to.

[He stands back up and carefully takes her hand.]

Lead the way, my...dear brave knight!

[Yes, he just barely left 'cute' of out that statement. Diarmuid doesn't want to die today.]

[She nods and leads him. After a while, they arrive at the Einzbern castle, where Saber rings the doorbell.]

Remember--stay behind me. I'll explain.

[Diarmuid nods, standing several steps behind her and making an effort to look as non-threatening as possible.]

I will follow your lead.

[chavalry]

[The door gets answered by a strange, dark-suited woman who instantly aims a gun at both of them. Saber holds up a hand to stop her.]

Hold, Lady Maiya! I am Saber. Look, my sword is the same.

[She holds up her sword as proof.]

Lancer is my ally. He will remain outside lest invited in.

[She turns around to Lancer.]

Will that arrangement satisfy you, Lancer?

[Diarmuid places a hand against his chest, bowing.]

If that is how you wish to handle things, then I will not argue. My purpose was to see you back here safely after what happened. I am sure you have nothing to worry about in your own Master's home.

[chavalry]

[Maiya stares at them both for a moment, and then turns around and slams the door in their face.]

...Do you think she's getting Master?

[That certainly wasn't a very warm welcome. For the first time that night, Saber feels a tinge of irritation, since this is far worse than what Lancer deserves.]

I am afraid I have no idea...

[Diarmuid looks at the door, bewildered.]

Is she always so...hospitable?

[chavalry]

She is harsh and implacable, but then again, she works with my Master, which means she might be put in danger at any time.

[A pause.]

I do not think she spoke much to me either...

What about your connection to your master?

[Diarmuid brushes off the discussion of the woman's behavior for now, since it's not the important thing here.]

Can you use it to call him out to you?

[chavalry]

Perhaps. But, do I have the right to disturb him in this manner? I do not know if he would appreciate it.
