You need not worry so much about owing me. We are knights and knights aid each other when they can. Someday we will have to fight each other until the death. Until then, there is no reason we should not work together.

Knights also know the value of responsibility. Would you take that from me then? My ability to right my own wrongs.

Of course not. All knights have the right to fix their wrongs. However, what knight who truly wishes to atone for their mistakes would turn away those who would aid them? What is worse? Accepting the help of another to right that wrong or never righting it at all?

[Diarmuid laughs, smiling rather sheepishly.]

I have had a lot of time to think about these things and many people who have questioned why I do what I do. I can't expect them to understand if I do not understand well enough to explain it to them.

Nobody ever explained chivalry so thoroughly to me.

[It was always "do this" or "do that." "This is right, that is wrong."]

Maybe they should have.

Unfortunately, many people who claim to be honorable knights who follow the road of chivalry only are doing what they have been taught. They have never questioned why they do what they do. It is merely a costume they wear, not a life they lead. Only once a person has really thought about it can it become a true part of them and only then can they explain it to others.

I am glad I was able to help you understand even a little better than you did before.

[He pauses a moment, not sure if he should ask a question about such a touchy subject, but eventually decides to do it.]

Do you think things might have gone differently with your father if you'd had someone explain things to you better?

[She takes a while to think. For her, understanding chivalry and desiring to uphold it is less for Father's sake than her own. With her father a king and herself a homunculus, she was above humans. She could not understand their hearts. Perhaps she would feel better if she understood.]

...No. Probably, if might have been worse if I could understand him, and yet he could not understand me.

[As much as it pains him, Diarmuid can't help but find himself agreeing with her.]

You are right. There was just so much between you two. Even if you both had been capable of understanding it still might not have been enough.

What...do you think you will do if you ever meet your father again?

[A strange light enters her eyes and she gives him an outright demonic look.]

I'll give him one chance, and one chance only, to acknowledge my superiority! And if not, I'll kill him! Over and over again until he admits he was wrong!

[Her expression doesn't frighten him. In fact, her enthusiasm actually makes him laugh. This is not the first time he has heard such a declaration.]

I would expect no less from you. I am sure as long as you keep trying eventually you will succeed!

[Her cheeks flush red again. It already feels like her victory, knowing that Lancer would side with her over the King of Knights himself.]

And will that be a promise too? That if you ever see me fighting Father, you will give your blessings to me?

Of course. King Arthur might be a legend, but I only know of him in legend and legends are often altered and changed as they are told. I should know. I watched my father do it all the time.

[He motions toward her.]

You, however, I have gotten the chance to actually talk to and know some. I can see how you are the same as your legend, but also different from it. It would be foolish of me to support one I don't know at all over one I do know.

Thank you. And if anyone from your past shows up through some sort of miracle, you have my promise that I will take your side.

I appreciate your offer, though I don't know that it would be necessary. Only one from my past would probably wish to fight me and he...I would insist on fighting alone.

[Diarmuid looks down, expression falling.]

I would rather not have to fight my lord at all, but I have a feeling that if we met again there would be no avoiding it.

He does not deserve the title. Even his treason was not executed in an honorable manner.

[Yes, she knows that it's an oxymoron. But at least she had raised an army and met her father in combat.]

I...know...

[It is hard for Diarmuid to say that. He had not held his lord's actions against him back when he had lay dying on the hill, but he understands why others do. And now that Diarmuid has a second chance and more time to think about things, he can't help but wonder sometimes if maybe he should have been angrier than he was.]

But even if his actions then were dishonorable, there was still much he taught me and things he did before that which were honorable. I will not strip him of those things just because he made a bad choice later on.

You are so very forgiving. Is this also part of your chivalry?

[Diarmuid is quiet for a few moments before shaking his head.]

Why shouldn't I forgive people? So often the things they do are accidents or the result of misunderstandings. Even when they are not, if I refuse to forgive why should they try to do better next time?

I guess it's just a part of who I am. No one ever really taught it to me if that is what you are asking.

B-because some betrayals really are that bad!

[She pouts. Again, she's jealous about how everything just seems to be built into him.]

Are they? Perhaps, but I haven't experienced one yet. Maybe once I do I will feel differently?

Nope. Because remember your promise. If you don't hate anyone now, you can't do a take back and say that you do later.

[Diarmuid shuts his eyes and smiles slightly.]

That is all right. I don't know if I would really ever hate anyone anyway. I honestly don't know if it is in me.

And I pray you will never have a chance to hate. You're too good of a knight for that.

[As soon as she realizes what she said, she blushes.]

[Diarmuid smiles slightly. He is touched by her honesty.]

I hope you are correct. Hate is not a pleasant emotion. I have no reason to wish to know it.
