[Diarmuid doesn't even have to answer. The look on his face says it all. Fortunately, the bar isn't too far away from the Clock Tower--it's probably why so many people were talking about it--and it doesn't take them long to get there.]

Here it is. Last chance to back out, otherwise I'm going to do my best to get you drunk enough to sing...

Let it never be said I ignored a challenge. Besides, I wouldn't dare turn down a date with you, now would I?

[Diarmuid laughs and then leads the way into the bar. Once they get inside, though, his confidence fades slightly. He's never been to a place like this before. Where exactly do they start?]

Umm...

...Relax. You're thinking too hard.

[He laughed, squeezing Diarmuid's hand before leading them both to a table and ordering a couple drinks.]

[Diarmuid laughs, letting Waver lead them to a table.]

I usually do. I guess I never stopped to think how different a place like this would be from the gatherings we had back when I first lived.

You'll get used to it, I think. It's not too difficult, but then again I'm certain I'd have just as much trouble if I was in your era.

Oh, I don't know about that. It might be a little startling at first, but I think you would do better than you think you would.

[Diarmuid pauses a moment to thank the waitress who delivers their drinks before continuing.]

If nothing else, you have studied my time. That is a lot different than having a bunch of random facts shoved into your head with no rhyme or reason.

You at least have the benefit of knowing the language already, for god's sake. Studying or not, I never did manage that. Although that's relatively minor, compared to everything else.

[Leaning his head on his hand, Waver studied Diarmuid with faint interest.]

...Do you mind it, being here like this?

Don't you have a translation spell or something you could use? I would think that would be something pretty standard for any magus.

[Diarmuid falls silent for a moment, thinking about Waver's question. He then reaches out and gently brushes his fingers over his friend's cheek.]

I like it a lot better now that I am with you. I could have done without ever meeting Kayneth, but if that is what I had to do to make my way to you, so be it.

I'm sure we all could have done without that. [He laughed softly, reaching up to take Diarmuid's hand in his own again.]

So you're happy, right? And you would tell me if you weren't?

[Diarmuid nods, giving Waver's hand a squeeze.]

I am happy. I'm here with you and that is so much more than I ever dared to dream of having when I first woke up in the Tower. The only other thing I could ask for is for you to be as happy as I am.

I know we have a lot of dangerous work left to do, but that aside, are you happy?

I think... [Pausing, he gave the concept serious consideration.]

Yes. I'm reasonably certain that I am.

Only 'reasonably certain?'

[Diarmuid draws Waver's hand up so that he can press a gentle kiss to the top.]

I am going to have to work harder. I was hoping for 'absolutely certain.'

I rarely opt for 'absolutely certain'. There's always room for error, and I'm such a miserable bastard that my definition of 'happy' might not match up to most others.

[Diarmuid shakes his head.]

I think you are being too hard on yourself. I think you are only truly miserable when you have to be in the same room as Flatt Escardos for more than two seconds at a time.

Really? We're on what could be called a date and you're invoking his name? Are you trying to kill me?

[Diarmuid laughs, his eyes darting to the entry of the bar as if he thinks Flatt might walk in at any moment.]

Maybe I am just testing our luck before things get going? Better he walk in now when we are just talking, then once I have gotten you drunk enough to start singing, right?

If he shows up at all, he's getting thrown out.

[Diarmuid tips his glass toward Waver with a grin before taking a drink.]

You know that is something I would want to see...

Believe me, it's bound to happen eventually. One of these days I'm very likely to simply throw him out a window.

[Diarmuid laughs and then motions to Waver's drink.]

Stop ignoring that glass you. How am I suppose to get you drunk enough to sing if you won't drink?

You are simply a terrible influence. [Laughing, he picked up his glass and took a drink.] Why do I live with you again?

Perhaps because deep down you want someone who will be a bad influence on you?
