[Diarmuid carefully sections Waver's hair so that the braids will be even once he starts. He almost mentions how he would do this for his daughter, but something tells him Waver might not react to it well.]

I don't suppose we are lucky enough that 'He of the Glorious Conditioner' had one, are we?

[He has no idea why Sephiroth would, but he would never have pegged the guy for having such excellent taste in conditioner either.]

If he does, I'm sure as hell not opening his trunk with that monstrosity in it to find out.

[Diarmuid laughs softly as he starts to braid one section of Waver's hair.]

Don't worry. If it comes down to it, I will find some way to protect you from the feathered menace. If nothing else, I should be able to out run it.

Chicken or Hellbeast it may be, but Lancer it is not.

[Diarmuid finishes one braid, tucking up the ends carefully so it doesn't unravel while he works on the next one.]

If you honestly think a hellbent chicken can defeat me, I would say the opposite. I haven't been doing enough to impress you lately.

[If Diarmuid's hand's weren't so busy braiding Waver's hair, he would probably be rubbing the bridge of his nose right now, but since they are, he just sighs instead.]

Waver, do Mac an Chuill and I need to come and stay in your room so that you feel safe?

Wh--d-don't treat me like a kid! I'm not crazy, the thing is evil!

[Diarmuid laughs softly.]

Did you ever stop to think I'm not treating you like a kid and am instead just looking for a good reason to have a sleep over so I can play with your hair some more?

Are you really thick enough to believe you need a reason?

[Diarmuid tucks a second finished braid up and moves onto a third. His eyes drop to the side and he is silent for several moments before finally speaking.]

I didn't want to bother you after how much I hung around while your powers were completely gone.

[The smothering. Remember it, Waver?]

Just between the two of us...I might not have minded quite as much as I let on.

[His voice gets soft.]

I am sorry. You know I worry and I really enjoy spending time with you, so...

I wasn't aware I apparently had a trend of saying things I don't mean. [The sarcasm is strong with this one.] When did I start doing that?

How about when you said I was smothering you? Especially since you say now that you 'might not have minded it as much as you let on'?

In hindsight, I'd rather have you smothering me than not have you around at all. How's that?

[Diarmuid smiles, finishing the third braid.]

I guess I can accept that.

[He gathers the three braids together and starts to carefully twist and twin them into a rather complex and beautiful knot that rests lightly on the rest of Waver's hair once he's done.]

Too bad we don't have a mirror...

I trust your work. More than that I trust you not to make me look like an idiot.

[Diarmuid laughs softly.]

What if it is less about trust and more about me wanting to show off my handiwork?

Oh--so it's a matter of pride, is it? Maybe I shouldn't be surprised.

[Diarmuid frowns slightly, though there is a twinkle in his eyes.]

I know I haven't done much recently to be proud of--certainly nothing like defeating an evil chicken or stealing someone's hair care products--but I do have a few talents to take pride in.

I'm always proud of you regardless. Not to say that's worth very much, but it's something.

Waver, keep saying things like that and I am going to start wondering if I pulled those braids too tight and accidentally cut off the blood flow to your brain...
