fionnuisce: (it was your heart on the line)

howsabout game-canon tl;dr because i'm bored

[It was either absurdly late at night or absurdly early in the morning when Waver finally did manage to fall asleep a floor away. He had been focused on updating and reorganizing his notes on the Tower, obsessively recording matters of death and revival as the administrators treated it. After that he'd spent half the night looking over his own writing as though he'd uncover some groundbreaking piece of information. Searching in vain for the thread that would unravel countless frustrating mysteries of this little hellhole.]

[When he had finally given up for the night, his mind was in a state of utter disarray. He paid scarcely a thought to matters of mental blocks or defenses, and it was that which made him vulnerable.]

[He'd been careless. It was stupid to think everyone would be so focused on the monster in the river. Stupid to think all seven Masters would cooperate. Stupid, stupid, stupid! Worse yet that an unpredictable Master should have an unimaginable Servant, a hundred-faced Assassin that demanded the attention of Lancer and Saber working as one. Waver had been frozen to the spot; wanting to trust his Servant's confidence, but being so afraid to die. He couldn't show fear to this Lancer who held so much faith in him, surely.]

['No matter the outcome of this battle, I swear that I will not allow you to be hurt.']

[The full meaning of that promise had gone over Waver's head until the moment that Servant intercepted a strike meant to kill a Master that didn't even know his name. When Lancer had sworn that oath to a hesitating Master, what he had truly meant were 'you will survive even at the cost of my life,' didn't he? It wasn't fair. It wasn't right. How could he just throw his own life away like that?! Even though he was in pain, Lancer hadn't dared let their enemies see him falter. No, it wasn't until the fight was over and they were safely back at home did he finally give out and collapse.]

['You stupid, stupid, idiot Servant--! I-if you really will do anything I tell you then I'm ordering you not to die!']

[He barely managed to choke back tears of anger and concern as he snapped at his unconscious knight. Waver Velvet was barely a passable magus. And he was a terrible healer. His prana flickered uncontrollably with the instability and fear in his mind, but through some measure of sheer luck he was able to repair the worst of the damage. What if it wasn't enough? What if this idiot that had been so kind to him never woke up? If he just...disappeared, with no trace he'd ever existed at all? Forget the war and forget the Grail, Waver's only concern was this unknown knight that so desperately wanted to protect his worthless life.]

[Why? How could anyone care so much about a pathetic student that they'd die for him? How was Waver supposed to handle a burden like that? What was he supposed to do when someone actually cared whether he lived or died? There was someone who smiled at him, treated him kindly and even praised his abilities...and Waver could barely even heal his injuries in return.]

[That was the night Waver felt a crushing sense of despair. The night he cried into his hands like a stupid child before falling into a less than restful sleep at his Servant's side...but not before silently praying Lancer would still be there when he woke up.]

[Waver stirred just slightly at the presence nearby, but on some unconscious level he seemed to decide it wasn't a threat worth properly waking up for. He slept through a few minutes longer--fifteen, maybe twenty--before that touch and presence registered as something unusual that might actually need his attention.]

...Diarmuid? [He turned enough to look over his shoulder, faintly confused.]
Did something happen?
fionnuisce: (speak to me)

[personal profile] fionnuisce 2013-05-14 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
...oh.

[So it was something like that...well, on the list of terrible things that might possibly have transpired, that wasn't so bad. Waver sat up and ran a hand through his hair, pushing it back from his face and straightening it out.]

No, nothing's wrong. I guess I just had kind of a late night and slipped up. Sorry about that, I'll try to be a little more careful.

[personal profile] fionnuisce 2013-05-14 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't really be able to guess if it's anything specific, not knowing what you actually saw.

[Waver sighed, reaching over to take an elastic and his sunglasses from the nearby nightstand; he tied his hair back with the former and placed the latter on his head as usual.]

Come on; if we're going to talk about this I'd prefer a change of scenery. It's too bloody dark in here.
fionnuisce: (speak to me)

[personal profile] fionnuisce 2013-05-14 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not too thrilled about the idea of running into any monsters, so let's just start with the hallway and see where things go from there.

[Pulling his suit jacket over his shoulders, Waver stepped outside and waited for Diarmuid to follow.]
fionnuisce: (when you've lost yourself completely)

[personal profile] fionnuisce 2013-05-14 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
[Waver leaned on the wall, crossing his arms.]

I'm listening, if you want to tell me.
fionnuisce: (didn't i my dear)

[personal profile] fionnuisce 2013-05-14 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
...oh. [He glanced away, fidgeting a little uncomfortably as he recalled the memory in question.]

I...don't like to fail. In fact, failure itself may well be my worst fear. So the mere idea of someone suffering because of my own shortcomings--because I'm not good enough--is terrifying. A thousand times more so if you're the one in pain because of it. I can't--I won't let that happen.

Look, I wasn't worth it then and I'm strong enough to protect myself now, so nobody should have to die for me...you least of all. Period. End of story.
fionnuisce: (move along like i know you do)

[personal profile] fionnuisce 2013-05-14 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
...I don't care whether you think I am or not. Don't--please don't make me live through that. I don't want anyone to throw their life away for mine, especially not you.
fionnuisce: (could be a night when your life ends)

[personal profile] fionnuisce 2013-05-14 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
...no, I think I understand. [Sighing, Waver pressed a hand to the side of his head.] I guess realistically, that's all I can ask of you--don't be stupid and don't be reckless. You're far too selfless for me to ask anything more than that.

Tell you what; you promise to try and do that much for me and I'll try not to work myself into the ground. Deal?
fionnuisce: (heart that will lead you to deceiving)

[personal profile] fionnuisce 2013-05-14 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
I know, Diarmuid. There's nothing that I wouldn't trust you with. I won't run off and get into more trouble than I can handle alone, alright?

[Waver smiled faintly, the expression seeming a little uncertain.]

...I'm afraid I haven't. It's a shame, I think I would have liked to.
fionnuisce: (move along just to make it through)

[personal profile] fionnuisce 2013-05-14 08:15 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen enough firsthand for now, so I would much rather hear you tell it yourself. If it wouldn't be any troublesome matter, of course.

[He sat down with his back to the wall, focused entirely on Diarmuid.]

Should that be the case, you have my undivided attention.
fionnuisce: (heart that will lead you to deceiving)

[personal profile] fionnuisce 2013-05-14 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
[Waver leaned his head on his hand, a small smile on his face as he listened attentively. Diarmuid seemed pleased to tell the story, and even that much enthusiasm was contagious.]

Sounds like you were all pretty lucky to have each other. You must've been happy.
fionnuisce: (didn't i my dear)

[personal profile] fionnuisce 2013-05-15 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
...You really think that was all there was to it? I mean...there's really no chance it wasn't just the curse?
